Kerala is renowned for its picturesque backwaters. Boat races are among the grandest traditions still alive and thriving in Kerala. These races, also known as VALLAMKALI, are a traditional Kerala festival that often takes place during Onam.
The races feature hundreds of men rowing SNAKE BOATS, called CHUNDANVALLAM, head-to-head in the backwaters of Central Kerala. The boats can be 100–120 feet long and have 64–128 paddlers on board. The races are characterized by men rowing in unison, singing the boat song, vanchipattu, while the backwaters turn into stadiums.
SNAKE BOATS, so called for their resemblance to the shape of a hooded snake, are the traditional war boats of Kerala. The local populace affectionately refers to them as CHUNDANVALLAM, which literally means "beaked boat", due to their pointed prow, which stands four feet above the water and gives the impression of a beak.
